FAQs
Your name is "Maumee Valley Martial Arts", does that mean you teach more than one martial art?
We teach Krav Maga, the Israeli System of Self-Defense. Krav, by its very nature is a system derived from the best parts of several different martial arts, primarily Karate, Brazilian Ju-Jitsu, and Muay Thai Kickboxing. It is not however MMA or Mixed Martial Arts Fighting. This is a realistic system of self defense designed for actual life or death situations, not the controlled environment of MMA with a referee and a cage. 75% of what we teach is not applicable to Mixed Martial Arts competitive fighting.
How effective is this really?
Martial arts training is as effective as you want it to be. If you are serious about training and training hard, practicing and trying at all times to better yourself, this can be devastatingly effective. Self-defense, much like CPR or any other skill is a "Use it or lose it" sort of endeavor.
Isn't carrying a gun a better way to defend oneself?
Maumee Valley Martial Arts neither condones nor condemns the carrying of firearms. However as some of you may already know, not everyone is suited to carry a gun. If you are not willing or able to use potentially deadly force to stop a violent encounter, then you should not carry a firearm!
Additionally if you are a law abiding citizen you will be unable to carry a weapon into many public places. Also using a firearm correctly and to best advantage still takes hours and hours of training. Martial Arts and other self defense techniques are with you always. You are never without your means of protection.
I have taken self defense classes before, is this really that different?
In a word: Yes. This is an on-going class, not some one time seminar. If you have taken self defense classes before you will understand that they primarily teach you how to avoid danger... Unfortunately for you, no one can avoid ALL danger, ALL the time. That is what Maumee Valley Martial Arts is for. We teach you what to do when you forgot to avoid, or when you never saw it coming. Plus we care about getting you fit at the same time.
Do I have to be in good physical shape?
Absolutely not! It would be wrong of us not to address your fitness level, but everyone has to start somewhere. These techniques are easy enough for anyone of any fitness level to use. Have faith in the fact that after taking this class for a while you WILL notice an increase in your fitness level.
We teach self defense to any person of any color, race, creed, denomination or religion.
